Japanese Calligraphy Art by Master Ritsuko Takaoka
We are particularly excited about this event due to its fresh perspective. While many Western viewers have become accustomed to thinking of Japanese calligraphy as a contemplative gesture, silently produced by an individual sitting at a desk, Master Takaoka performs her interpretation of this traditional art from a unique standing posture.
Using a long brush and large sheets of paper which carpet the floor of her performance space, she incorporates music, audience participation (particularly children), and fluid, dance-like movements into the application of her designs.
This fascinating technique represents the signature style of Sogen Shodo Kai, a well-known calligraphy group in Japan with a rich history. This group is a major contributor to Nitten, the most popular of all major art organizations in Japan.
